ALIANZA LATINA APLICANDO SOLUCIONES (A.L.A.S.), Inc.

My name is Alejandra Gonzalez. I have five children, two girls and three boys and three of my children have special needs. Exactly two years ago I was at a clinic and a women approached me and asked me if I had children with special needs. I answered, “yes and at that moment she gave me a flyer entitled “Family Fun Night” with the date and information of an upcoming event.  At that moment I didn’t know what that was about but I thanked the lady.

One day I was going through my papers and found the flyer the lady had giving me a while back entitled “Family Fun Night”. I was very happy to see  the event was coming up. Even though, I was a bit unsure I decided to go with my entire family. When I arrived the outside of the building looked empty. I was scared someone was going to ask me, “What is wrong with your children?” I will never forget that moment when I opened those doors and I felt that everyone in that place told me silently “You are not alone”, "We are all in your same situation". I felt at peace and heard the encouraging words I needed to endure my battle.

ALAS has changed my life and the lives of all my children. Now I know that a Family Fun Night is only one of the many things that this organization offers. I have a lot to thank them because ALAS has helped me advocate for my children in their school and in all areas. Now I feel confident and prepared to do it on my own. ALAS is an organization that has events for the entire family. ALAS cares about the parents. During the support groups I find the space to let my feelings out ALAS has provided my older children with the opportunity to join their volunteer team and help during the Family Fun Nights, support groups and other events.

I have been at ALAS  for two years and I wished I would have found  the organization sooner. Last year I joined the Board of Directors of ALAS and I have grown as a parent and professional. I also took the Parent to Parent of WI training and I support new parents who come to the organization in search of support. I’m also a member of the Fundraising committee and I help organize events such as the “Dancing with ALAS”. I have shared my experiences and provided information by presenting in various conferences and participating in radio stations in the community. 

ALAS offers programs that provide information to the community and organizes events that benefit our children and where the entire family and friends are a part of. ALAS receives new families on a daily basis at a time where funds might not be sufficient, but the needs of our families are great. ALAS is a small organization that is dedicated to helping many families throughout the years. Today, I have the satisfaction of seeing my children improve and grow. ALAS needs helps and the families need ALAS.

Mi nombre es Alejandra González. Tengo cinco hijos, dos niñas y tres niños y tres de mis hijos tienen necesidades especiales.  

Hace dos  años exactamente en una clínica una mujer se me acerco y me pregunto, tienes niños con necesidades especiales?  Yo solo dije que si, y en ese momento me dio solo un número de teléfono en un papel y una fecha con un titulo Noche Familiar. Aunque no entendía de qué se trataba le di las gracias pues todavía faltaba mucho tiempo para ese evento.

Un día revisando papeles de citas, encontré el papel solo con el titulo noche familiar y  afortunadamente el evento no había pasado. Ese día no muy segura me decidí a ir con toda mi familia, por fuera se veía vacio, triste y me sentía como que alguien me iba a preguntar que tienen tus hijos? Nunca se me va olvidar que al abrir las puertas todos los que estaban ahí me decían en silencio “no estás sola” somos muchos, y todo tipo de palabras de  aliento para seguir luchando. 

A.L.A.S. Cambio mi vida y la de mis hijos, ahora sé que una  Noche Familiar es solo una parte de lo mucho que ofrece esta organización. Yo tengo mucho que agradecerle a A.L.A.S. Aquí he aprendido a  abogar por mis hijos en la escuela y en todos los lugares.  A.L.A.S es una organización que no tan solo organiza eventos para los niños, sino para toda la familia.  A.L.A.S. también se preocupa por los padres y en sus grupos de apoyo he encontrado mi espacio para desahogarme cuando lo he necesitado. A.L.A.S. les ha dado a los mayores de mis hijos, la oportunidad de ser parte del grupo de voluntarios en las noches familiares, en grupos de apoyo y otros eventos.

Solo tengo  dos años de conocer A.L.A.S. y siempre digo, porque no supe antes que existía esta organización. El año pasado me uní a la mesa directiva de A.L.A.S. y me he desenvuelto como madre y profesional. También tome el entrenamiento de Padre a Padre y soy madre líder y apoyo a nuevos padres que llegan buscando apoyo.

 Durante mi tiempo aquí también soy miembro del Comité de recaudación de Fondos y ayudo a organizar eventos como “Bailando con ALAS”. He presentado en varias conferencias y en las estaciones de radio de la comunidad, todo por el apoyo que he recibido de ALAS.  A.L.A.S. ofrece programas, da información de servicios en la comunidad  y los eventos que organiza son a beneficio de nuestros hijos  donde toda la familia y amigos formamos parte.   A.L.A.S día  a día sigue recibiendo familias nuevas, sabiendo que no tiene suficientes  fondos; pero es tan grande la necesidad  de las familias A.L.A.S. es una organización pequeña que se ha esforzado por continuar ayudando a un número de familias tan grande por tantos años. Hoy solo tengo la satisfacción de ver a mis hijos mejorando y crecer  A.L.A.S. necesita ayuda y las familias necesitamos de A.L.A.S.
